Executive Summary
I am an Acupuncture Physician, educator, author, and entrepreneur with extensive business, clinical, educational, fundraising, governmental, journalistic, and political experience. I have been intimately involved in the creation, funding, and management of clinics, colleges, and professional associations of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine; the writing, passage, and administration of laws and regulations governing the practice of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine both in the state of Florida and nationally; the creation, financing, building, and marketing of Kanaya, a $35,000,000 green condominium project in Sarasota, Florida; the publication of many articles and several books in the field of alternative healthcare; and the creation and funding of a million gallon per year bio-diesel facility in Portland, Maine.
Business Experience:
I owned and operated a 155 acre organic wheat farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, 1971-1981; was publisher of the Tucson Nite Times, 1978; have been in private practice since 1975; started and was President of two schools of traditional Chinese medicine, the Suncoast School of Acupuncture and the Academy of Chinese Healing Arts (since sold and renamed East West College of Natural Medicine); built Kanaya, a $35,000,000 green condominium in Sarasota, Florida on the former site of the East West College; and most recently assisted my 36 year old son in creating and funding Maine Standard Bio-Fuels, a million gallon a year bio-diesel facility in Portland, Maine.
Clinical Experience:
In 1975 and 1976 I apprenticed with Dr. James Tin Yau So, founder of NESA, and Dr. John Ho Fen Shen at the Oriental Acupuncture Center in Everett, MA, working 40 to 48 hours each week as an unpaid intern, the most valuable educational experience of my life. Upon graduation from the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) in 1977, I moved to Tucson, Arizona and went into private practice there, one of only two practitioners in the entire state. I treated all manner of ailments with remarkable success, primarily employing protocols learned directly from Dr. So.
In 1979 I moved to Pittsburgh, PA where I worked for three years in private practice in association with a chiropractor, Dr. Ed McGivern, who introduced me to the realm of nutritional therapies, along with Murray Susser, MD, then President of the American Holistic Medical Association, and Dr. Harold Manner, chair of the Department of Biology at Loyola University in Chicago.
In March, 1982 I relocated to Sarasota, Florida where I was hired as a Physician’s Assistant to Dr. Wallace S. Willman, past President of the American Osteopathic Association, who was one of the first practicing physician acupuncturists in the USA.
However, by 1982, at age 80, he developed essential tremens, and it was my privilege to replace him as the acupuncturist in his very busy practice while he performed other more traditional osteopathic medical duties. I worked with Dr. Willman from 1982 until 1984, when I received my Florida acupuncture license and resumed private practice in my own clinic. I have been in the private practice of traditional Chinese medicine 48 to 50 weeks a year in my own clinic ever since, from 1984 through 2011, with all the responsibilities and rewards a private practice entails. I have also worked extensively with substance abusers both in private practice and at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, in 1977 and 1987.
Over the past 36 years I have treated thousands of patients tens of thousands of times with acupuncture, sotai exercises, Chinese herbal remedies, and functional nutritional medicine. I am quite familiar with the following approaches to acupuncture and the practice of traditional Chinese medicine: Five Element, Manaka, Dr. So’s, TCM, and Toyohari style treatments. I am also well versed in German electro-acupuncture diagnostic techniques (and their limitations).
Since 2008 I have serves as treating Acupuncture Physician at the annual conference of the National Foundation for Women Legislators.
